Diving the west coast of Okinawa Island – Okinawa Diving

Hello there,

We had great diving today as well, at Okinawa West Coast.
I had Matt from Stanford University and Mr Mizuno from Japan diving with me. We had great Macro dives at various dive sites.
Everybody is enjoying their 2 days/ 3 days diving in Okinawa.

Many nudibranches, various kinds of coral, and many anemonefish laying eggs.

At the end of the dives today, Naoki found a big Giant Frogfish sitting among the coral reef at Marina 225.
That was a great find, and even by the frogfish, we found a rare kind of nudibranch sitting. That was very funny.

It’s too bad that my camera started fogging during the third dive of the day :P

Macro Dives in the Kerama Islands – Okinawa Diving

It was a nice sunny day- very warm, I thought I could just stay underwater at Kuroshima forever.

One big surprising thing happened today -
There was a baby earthquake while we were enjoying the second dive of the day.
Earthquake Data:
12:39 (April 14, 2011)
The  epicenter – North of Zamami Island (Kerama Islands)
Magnitude 3.7
Seismic intensity 1

It was a very small earthquake, but we heard the big sound in the water, which was followed by a long vibration. I thought that the compressor on our boat exploded for some reason, or our boat ran aground, or a war started in the Kerama Islands.
Luckily no damage, no body was hurt, and the quake was so small.
But it should be the once in the lifetime thing – it was scary but at the same time amazing to feel the power of the earth.

Bluestripe Snappers – Kerama Islands (Okinawa Diving)

Hello everyone,

Today’s underwater photo is ‘Bluestripe Snappers’. They have yellow body with blue stripes, thus called ‘four stripes snappers (Yosuji Fuedai)’ in Japanese.

This was taken at Dragon Lady, one of my favorite dive sites in Kerama Islands. You can see various kinds of sea creatures, including Jawfish, Garden Eels, Bluespotted Stingrays, Coral Groupers… and shrimps like Banded Coral Shrimps, “Urocaridella sp.”, Durban hinge-beak shrimps, White banded cleaner shrimps, and much more.

Diving the Underwater Ruin in Chatan – Okinawa, Japan

Hello everyone,

We went diving the ‘Underwater Ruin’, in Chatan.
Along with other dive shops, we have been working closely with the researchers and professors in Okinawa who study to identify the underwater landscapes that look like a part of ruins.

Here in Chatan, there is an area that look very much a like a part of ruin or castle. When you dive there, you can see the wall, steps, some corners that really look like ‘something’.

The coast line of Chatan and Kadena have a long reef covered by rich healthy soft coral. When you look very close, you realize that some man-made-looking structure is hiding under there.

Here, more pictures from dives today.
The wall and the structure below are quite similar to the land castle remains in Okinawa – such as Nakagusuku Castle, Zakimi Castle, and Nakijin Catsle. Along with other castles and sacred places, Okinawa has a set of World Heritages.

Caves and Crystal Clear Water diving in Okinawa, Japan

Hello there, we went diving the Labyrinth in the Chiibishi Islands.
There are 3 deserted islands within 30 minutes of distance from Kadena, where we have a good dive site in the south of Kamiyama Island, sheltered from North Wind.

There are many caves and swimthrus, that’s why it’s called ‘Labyrinth’. The visibility was great today- over 30m!(100ft!)

Diving Inanbishi – Okinawa West Coast Local Dive Sites

Here are some photos from our recent dives at Inanbishi.
Enjoy!

The picture above, on the left is a juvenile Yellow Boxfish. They like to hang around and hide behind of inside the rocks, very shy – but sooooo cute!
On the right is a picture of a tiny Pygmy Sea Dragon. They tend to hang out around the same area, but sometimes they move away… It’s always a pain in the butt to find them. There are 3 of them now around Inanbishi area.

Here is a colorful Manta Shrimp – when you have a good strobe, you would realize how colorful and beautiful they are…
And, there is 1 white tip reef shark at Inanbishi. I know where he always takes a nap!
